5 Surprising Facts About Steel That You Didn't Know

Steel has become one of the conquerors of the construction industry. That is why Magna® Steel is proud to have some of the best steel in the country. However, we didn’t get there without knowing the steel tha
t we work with.
Here are 5 facts that you probably didn't know:
1. Steel Is 1,000 Times Stronger Than Iron
You might have known that steel is pretty strong, but did you know how strong? Steel in itself is an alloy of iron. However, when compared to pure iron, steel is roughly 1,000 times stronger.
2. Steel is one of the most recycled materials on the planet
According to the American Iron and Steel Institute, 88% of the steel in the world is recycled. Steel can actually be recycled without losing any of its original strength or properties!
3. Steel Skyscrapers are designed to be disassembled
In 1884, the first steel skyscraper was built. This was the Home Insurance Building in Chicago. Other steel skyscrapers like the Empire State Building and the U.S. Steel Tower are designed to be assembled and disassembled easily.
4. Stainless Steel CAN rust
The biggest selling point of stainless steel is its unique anti-rust capabilities. However, this is not always the case. In some cases, the protective oxide layer that keeps steel alloys from rusting can be compromised due to neglect or chance. However, rusting only occurs in stainless steel when it is exposed to plain steel.
5. There are more than 3,500 different grades of steel.
Magna® steel itself offers steels in the grades of Fe: 550 and Fe:500. However, there are more than 3,500 grades of steel in the global market. This is due to the various alloys that are mixed and matched to form different variations of steel. Similarly, steel that is made with a thermomechanical quenching process is likely to produce a higher grade of steel than others.
